Napier City and Hastings District Councils are considering doing away with pedestrian crossings in the province after a recent BayBuzz survey showed a mere 12% of Bay motorists stop for waiting pedestrians.

Simon Robson, Hastings District Council Traffic Engineer, said Bay driver apathy meant the cherished zebra crossings were now dangerous anachronisms.

“Black and white stripes are a big grey area,” said Simon.
