Amanda Sowersby – Tranquility Exhibition
March 28 @ 10:00 am – April 11 @ 4:00 pm
Amanda graduated with a degree in Fine Arts from Massey University, specializing in painting, in 2005. Over the past two decades, she has participated in various group exhibitions. However, it is in the last 2-3 years that Amanda has re-emerged onto the art scene with a transformed artistic approach. Her artistic evolution has taken her from abstract, contextual, and identity-themed works in her early 20s to her artistic therapeutic style.
Amanda now expresses her love and passion by painting beautiful, tranquil sea and sky scenes.
Her signature 5D palette features soft, soothing colours that shift and transform throughout the day. With over 25 years of experience as a photographer, Amanda captures the beauty of sunrises, sunsets, and native birds, providing inspiration for her paintings. Her creative process involves a meditative approach, immersing herself in the scene, capturing it through her camera lens, and then translating it onto canvas.
Amanda’s paintings often undergo a transformative journey, reflecting her spiritual and intuitive connection with the subject. The initial soft and light tones, achieved through blending techniques, give way to a darker threshold that requires a push-and-pull interplay of brushstrokes and colours. Eventually, a harmonious emergence of light results in paintings that exude peace and tranquillity.
This artistic process becomes a healing journey for Amanda, as each painting reflects a profound exploration of emotions and experiences. The artworks take on a life of their own, shifting and changing throughout the day, adapting to different lighting conditions and moods. It also invites the viewer to experience a deep sense of peace, harmony, and tranquillity, offering feelings of safety and reassurance, allowing them to get lost in the painting.
Amanda, a local artist and artistic therapist, is the founder of Art & Alchemy Ltd. Her art school offers creative guidance to children, teenagers, and adults. At the same time, she also provides private one-on-one artistic therapy sessions dedicated to healing. Amanda specialises in watercolour, acrylic and oil painting, chalk pastel, charcoal, drawing and clay modelling.
