Hastings Choral Society ‘Perfect Nostalgia’
April 23, 2023 @ 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm
Hastings Choral Society is looking forward to their upcoming ‘Perfect Nostalgia’ concert as it has suffered several set-backs. Initially the concert material was put together by our musical director Joe Christensen in 2020 but circumstances, in the form of Covid-19, meant that the concert had to be cancelled. In 2021 the choir began rehearsing the material again but Covid restrictions on gathering sizes meant that it was not viable to proceed and it was again shelved. Not wanting to risk cancelling a third time the decision was made to reschedule the concert for now, 2023, in the hope that life would have returned to some sense of normality and concerts could proceed.
The pandemic, and more recently Cyclone Gabrielle, have taken their toll on the choir and our numbers are rather reduced from our 2019 muster. Despite these adverse events we have continued to grow in competency under the excellent guidance of our musical director and have enjoyed preparing for this concert.
The music chosen is from the late 1800s and early 1900s and the aim is to celebrate the richness of sound of that period. From The Bartered Bride and Die Fledermaus to The Merry Widow and Desert Song we have collected a series of pieces for choir and soloists that will showcase the glorious harmonies and melodies of a time gone by.
Soloists joining the choir for the concert are the very experienced local soprano Dianne Abraham, tenor Nigel Tongs who is from Palmerston North, and Khalael Uelese. Joining this line up of talent is up-coming local student Ruth Stevens.
The choir are also delighted to welcome some of the cast of the upcoming college production of The Addams Family who will be sharing some of the music from the show during this concert.
The ‘Perfect Nostalgia concert is on Sunday 23 April, 2.00pm at Taikura Rudolph Steiner, Nelson Street, Hastings. Tickets are available at the door.
