The Big Apple Project
September 2 All day
Arts Inc. Heretaunga, Studio Benega and the Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival are pleased to bring this mass participation public art trail event to Hastings.
Apples are well known to represents a source of health and are an important facet of Hawke’s Bay food production. So, in our desire to bring together artists, businesses and communities in the spirit of generosity and fun, we decided to celebrate in big style with the ‘Big Apple’ Project!
Using a supplied 1 cubic metre fiberglass apple as a blank canvas, we will be selecting 20 local artists to create unique apple sculptures. These will initially form a trail which will weave its way through Hastings, transforming the streets, parks and public spaces into a fun, free art gallery, taking people on a journey of discovery for a few weeks from mid-August to October 2022. This will be followed by Public Auction at the 2022 Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival. It is expected that the ‘Big Apples’ will end up in private art collections along with businesses wanting to own a unique representation and celebration of Hawke’s Bay creativity and a great local industry.
We hope the concept will have wide appeal and far-reaching benefits in our region, making it an annual event. You can check out the artists’ progress for this year, and find out more by visiting thebigapple.co.nz
We welcome designs in any art form; traditional to new media, fine art to illustrations, street art and mosaic, embroidery to metalwork. Whatever the art form, we’re keen to add drama, fun and a creative flourish to the big apple trail.
