Responding to violence against his own family recently in Flaxmere, Hastings Councillor Henare O’Keefe is organizing the Enough is Enough community walk, or hikoi, on June 27 to galvanize community concern and action.

Supporters will assemble at 10am at Ron Giorgi Park in Flaxmere and march to the clocktower in Hastings CBD. Speakers there will include MPs Foss and Barker, as well as Mayor Yule, and of course Henare.

Says Henare: “It’s time to stand up as a community and say enough is enough, we are not going to stand for this, we are taking our streets, homes and communities back. We will never wave the white flag, we will not fold up into the fetal position and go away. The time is now to join us, take a public stand and let the hikoi declare that violence in any shape or form is unacceptable.”

Henare’s bottomline … taking the community back begins with the people in the community, who must take personal responsibility for setting the standards of conduct they consider acceptable.

Amen.
