Foodstuffs has been given consent from Hastings District Council for the construction of a New World supermarket at location straddling 32-34 Havelock Road and 25-27 Porter Drive.

The site is reportedly owned by Foodstuffs, but has been occupied by Tumu ITM.

Havelock North’s only existing supermarket is also a New World, so it’s possible the town will end up with two New Worlds, but it was reported in 2021 that Foodstuffs was proposing a change of location. Foodstuffs did not comment and referred Bay Buzz to the district council.

The consent application was made on 5 July last year, and given approval in January.

A council spokeswoman said there was currently an application for a variation of the resource consent conditions relating to the design of the vehicle entry from Porter Drive. This was in the early stages of being assessed.

The spokeswoman said the council was talking to various parties about acquiring part of the existing New World carpark to increase parking spaces in the town.

The proposal to buy a section of the site was included in the council’s Long Term Plan, but this was dependent on Foodstuffs obtaining resource consent approval to relocate.

  1. Would be nice if it was a “new” supermarket to provide some competition in the marketplace.

  2. Government is worried about Dualopy, but for Havelock North it’s a Monopoly! Landbanking to replicate a bigger, better version of itself is a bit of a comedy. However, I would welcome the opportunity to shop in a space/place that allowed the customer to tick off the shopping list rather than apply that energy to avoiding the endless stackers and other staff who block safe passage with their huge trolleys of greens; meats; and whatever foodstuffs that make their mission more important than the customer!! I hate supermarket shopping – don’t get me started on the carpark!
So yes, I’m with Dan! I wish we could have some competition in the marketplace!

  3. It’s a dreadful shame that a beautiful little town be saddled with a commercial monstrosity as the one called “artist impression” very little artistry in that.
Competition is healthy and why does a company get monopoly?

  4. When I first read the article I thought it was the existing one moving to a better site. Seems this is not the case? You’ll end up with the same ridiculous situation as in Napier with two Countdown supermarkets across the road from each other. So much for competition – Hastings council has made a mistake here IMHO.

  5. Very disappointed that we are getting “more of the same”.
Was looking forward to some healthy competition.

    1. Seems fair? Countdown kept out by planning exclusion by new world, Free gouging to New World, That’s councils for you

  6. Taradale has same issue when countdown attempted to aggregate properties off Gloucester st – New Greenmeadows owners brought site in middle from 1 land owner & Taradale is stuck with an over priced 4 square since
