From a great day of jazz at Church Road Winery, to having your say on a number of important council consultations, to pressure on our food banks, to a climate action competition for HB schools, to the latest reporting from the HB Knowledge Bank, here are some notable items you might have missed.

Jazz in the Park

Take in a great day of jazz at Church Road Winery’s Jazz in the Park on Saturday 12 April, 2-7p. Gates open at 1:30p.

Headlined by the remarkable Thabani Gapara, whose soulful saxophone will transport you to a world of Afro-Jazz, funk and soul. Plus, the legendary Hawke’s Bay Jazz Club Big Band, followed by some of Hawke’s Bay’s sassiest songstresses—Margot Pierard with Whiskey Green Horse, Jess Atkins with Deep Fried Funk, and Lady Larisa and her Band.

Tickets here.

Have your say

There’s heaps of council consulting underway. You can’t say you haven’t been asked!

HDC is consulting on the Future of Havelock North Village (over 21 April) and also on local alcohol policy (closes 14 April).

NCC is consulting on both its Annual Plan (closes 30 April), its local alcohol policy (closes 14 April), and its waste management and minimisation programme (starting Monday April 7th, over 11 May)

HBRC is consulting on its Annual Plan as well (closes 2 May).

Hungry Kiwis

The New Zealand Food Network (NZFN), Aotearoa’s largest ‘for-purpose’ surplus food distributor, reports that its 60+recipient Food Hubs are now feeding over half a million people per month, while struggling with the same amount of stock levels.

The latest data from July to December 2024 shows that NZFN provided food to over 500,000 individuals each month through its partner Food Hubs, including The Food Basket CHB in Waipukurau.

Mel King, General Manager at The Food Basket CHB in Waipukurau, comments, “We have made huge changes as needs dictate and NZFN has been a vital, anchoring part of our operations over the past few years. We wouldn’t be able to do this urgent and important work without NZFN backing us up with good food.”

If you’re a food business looking for a solution to your surplus, can donate some stock, or anyone able to support with financial donations so we can purchase high quality, nutritious food and essential items, please get in touch.

HB schools climate change challenge

Hawke’s Bay Regional Council has launched the Hawke’s Bay Schools Climate Change Challenge, open to all schools across the region.

Schools can choose from five project categories: renewable energy, sustainable transport, waste reduction, climate resilience, and climate change awareness. With two terms to develop and deliver their projects, students will have the opportunity to showcase their creativity and innovation in addressing climate change.

The top three entries will receive prizes, and all participants will be recognised for their efforts. The Challenge was last held in 2023, with Havelock North High School taking out the top spot for their school-wide plant growing competition.

For more information, including challenge details and registration, visit the HBRC website or contact Hinerangi Price at [email protected]
