Conrad Waitoa for Heretaunga Hastings, Hawke’s Bay Regional Council and I am standing because I believe we must take courageous steps to build a region that is sustainable, people-centred, and prepared for the future.
My key priorities
I have outlined four key priorities that I believe are essential to securing the future of Heretaunga- Hastings and the wider Hawke’s Bay region. These priorities stem from community conversations, my lived experience as a local, and my enduring commitment to service. The four priorities are:
- Water Safety, Quality and Supply
- Flood Risk and Land Management
- Fair Rates and Smart Spending
- Parks, Inclusion and Community Wellbeing
These focus areas reflect both the challenges our communities face and the aspirations we share for a thriving, resilient region. They will guide my work as your elected representative.
3. Fair Rates and Smart Spending
The 2023 rating model shifted more of the cost onto general ratepayers. Many now see that shift as unfair. I will conduct a comprehensive review to ensure that rates are fair and accurately reflect who benefits from the services delivered. That includes ensuring that those who use and benefit most contribute proportionately. I will focus on the public feedback that challenged recent proposals for steep rate increases. I will focus on funding essential services such as flood protection, public transport, and climate adaptation without unfairly shifting the burden onto households. I will focus on making sure every dollar works harder and that spending decisions are transparent, strategic, and justified. Good governance requires fiscal clarity, sound judgment, and decisions that reflect the real priorities of Heretaunga Hastings and the wider Hawke’s Bay.
