Labour Weekend (Saturday and Sunday 24-25 October) is an opportunity to visit many of Hawke’s Bay’s open studios to watch artists at work, ask questions, watch their creative processes and perhaps buy some art directly from the artist while being in these sometimes very private spaces

The open studio tour is the revitalized Hawke’s Bay Art Trail, a collaboration between Creative Arts Napier and Arts Inc. Heretaunga and is part of the Harcourts Hawke’s Bay Arts Festival.  The studios are those of the artists listed in the Hawke’s Bay Art Guide and they’ll have their studio doors open to art lovers driving around the district on self-directed tours. Involved are approximately 32 artists and 13 galleries located in Hastings, Havelock North, Napier and into rural Hawke’s Bay.

Plan your route using the free maps and Art Guides that can be acquired from Arts Inc. Heretaunga in Hastings and CAN in Napier and at i-Sites. At Arts Inc and CAN there is also much to be seen before heading out for a weekend immersed in the many and various mediums and styles of artwork.

It’s a diverse list. There is Napier’s close-knit art community on the hill, or studio-hopping in Taradale. Visit the Hawke’s Bay Inkers Pop-Up Gallery in Hastings Street to see live printmaking demo’s and browse the unframed prints.

Over on the Havelock side, visit painter Lizzie Beere in St George’s Road, see Hawke’s Bay landscapes painted by Graham Stitchbury, Abbey Merson’s quirky contemporary scenes or Sophie Lankovsky’s glittering raku-fired ceramic birds of New Zealand.

Visit the surprising number of  artists studios out on the coast in Clive, Haumoana and TeAwanga.

Look out for the Art Trail signs at the front gates – these studios will be displaying and selling work from 10am – 4pm on Saturday and Sunday, 24 and 25 October.

Individual artists will be giving studio demonstrations and at CAN you can sign up for inspiring creative workshops.
