Hastings Distillers’ founders Kate Galloway and David Ramonteu may have to make more space in their trophy cabinet to house the recent haul of awards from the New Zealand Spirit Awards.

In a ceremony last weekend, their L’Opera aperitif took home the trophy for Best New Zealand Liqueur out of 37 liqueurs entered, while the East Block 200 gin took out double gold – a significant achievement considering there were 145 gins entered in the competition.

“L’Opera and East Block 200 are quite quickly growing a dedicated following, who enjoy their balance and boldness,” says David. “We were absolutely delighted to accept such an important trophy.”

Founded in 2019, Hastings Distillers is New Zealand’s first Biogro certified organic spirits and liqueur producer. The tasting room is located in the buzzing Heretaunga Street East precinct, where its foodie neighbours include Sazio, Common Room and FunBuns.

Recently Kate and David launched a 90-minute guided bespoke tasting experience for those wanting to broaden their knowledge on all things gin. The tasting includes L’Opera and the couple’s handcrafted gins, accompanied by a platter of local delicacies – the tasting rounded off with a cocktail from the menu. $90 per person and bookings are essential. www.hastingsdistillers.com

  1. Congratulations, I am looking forward to a tasting sometime, I was given a bottle of your East Block 200 recently by your friend Nirania and I was most impressed sadly you say it is finished already.
