Royston Hospital in Hastings has introduced the first robotic-assisted surgical system in Hawke’s Bay, significantly improving local access to advanced surgery for patients who previously had to travel outside the region for procedures. 

The Medtronic Hugo™ surgical robot is a technology that supports surgeons performing complex operations through small incisions with enhanced visualisation and precision. The system is being used across several specialties, including urology and gynaecology as well as general surgical procedures. 

Hawke’s Bay urologist, Dr Kenny du Toit, who trained on the Hugo system in Sydney before its deployment at Royston Hospital, said the local robotic-assisted technology is a significant win for surgeons and patients alike. 

“Robotic-assisted surgery allows us to perform very complex procedures more efficiently and accurately. For suitable patients, that can mean a smoother recovery and a quicker return to normal activities. 

“Importantly it also expands treatment options for local residents who previously may have needed to travel outside Hawke’s Bay for those procedures. We hope this soon provides a pathway to include all patients within both the private and public health sectors.” 

Royston Hospital General Manager, Anna Harland, says the investment also reflects a broader commitment to improving access to advanced care while supporting regional clinical teams through training and collaboration.

Royston Hospital, part of the Evolution Healthcare Group, has also hosted demonstration events for local doctors and healthcare professionals, providing an opportunity to see the system in operation and learn more about referral pathways and surgical planning using the technology.
