Most people will know The Wedding Singer as a 1998 American romantic comedy film, set in the 1980s that tells the story of a wedding singer who falls in love with a waitress. Starring Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore this classic film was later adapted into a stage musical of the same name on Broadway in 2006.

Now Theatre Hawke’s Bay brings it to life on stage at the Playhouse Theatre in Hastings.

Arguably the greatest decade for pop culture in history, the 80s brought us New Wave and Hip Hop music, the Walkman and the mix tape, velvet scrunchies and crimped hair, acid wash jeans and high top sneakers, Super Mario Brothers and Pac-Man.

The Wedding Singer has plenty of 80s nostalgia to satisfy – the cleverly written songs, the fluoro fashion and the big hair.

Director Kayleigh Purvis is excited at the opportunity to finally bring The Wedding Singer to the stage for Theatre Hawke’s Bay. “I’ve been waiting what feels like so many years to get started on this project, and now we are nearly at opening night, the time has just flown by.

“I love the fast pace of this musical and that every character has the opportunity to shine and steal the show. The songs are perfectly written to enhance the storyline and there’s no doubt you’ll leave on a high.

“As a director, I love being a part of community theatre and seeing everyday people transform through the rehearsal period into absolute stars. Everyone has worked so hard to make this show a must see!”

Show opens Thursday November 4th  to Saturday November 20th

Tickets $39.50 through i-ticket. Seating spaced for level 2 restrictions so numbers will be limited.
