The HB branch of the Green Party has conducted a survey of all local body candidates regarding their views on key environmental issues. Commendably, over half of the candidates have responded.
Here are the questions asked:
- How important is recognising climate change as an emergency by ensuring your council is committed to climate change mitigation through all your council’s policies, strategies, operational decisions and actions?
- What is your commitment to supporting the introduction of kerbside food waste collection by your local council?
- To what level would you initiate and/or support policies that prioritise water conservation and quality within the communities that you would represent?
- How strong is your support for your council signing up to the Fossil-Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, and making Hawke’s Bay fossil fuel free by 2050?
Not surprisingly, the responses range from plain ignorant, to deliberately vague, to very well-articulated. If one takes the trouble to scan the lot of them, it’s no too hard to separate the wheat from the chaff.
In fairness, one should expect candidates for Regional Council – the region’s ‘official’ environmental planner, regulator and cheerleader – to be most informed around issues raised by the Greens. So disappointing to see no responses from HBRC candidates Craig Foss or Jock Mackintosh.
The candidates’ responses are available online here.

Craig Foss has no green fingers – what’s he doing there?
being Mr Money-grubber for the Haves. as usual.
Good question.
Am I correct Craig has ‘viticultural, horticultural, or farming’ interests? Isn’t ‘business interests’ often the reason people stand for council?
What efforts have Greens put in to ensure climate regulations doesn’t interfere with sufficient food supply?
Me thinks Craig Foss, is there for his own interests. Not alone either! End of
