What’s your big idea or aspiration for Hawke’s Bay in 2025 … and beyond?
The BayBuzz team is planning our January/February magazine now.
Its theme will be ‘big ideas for Hawke’s Bay’. So we’d like to know yours!
What new initiative, project or accomplishment would you most like to see our region achieve or pursue over the coming year?
Could be in any sector … business, environment, social well-being, the arts, local government … whatever lights your fire.
Just think big! We’re hoping for ideas that could be long-term game-changers or simply ignite a heap of community benefit and enthusiasm … ideas Hawke’s Bay can rally around.
Email your idea(s) to: [email protected]
You can send us a few words, paragraphs or an entire essay.
But we need to hear from you by Dec 1st.

I’ve put in my 2 cents worth – amalgamate all the councils and have them concentrate on infrastructure and environmental issues to start with. Unlikely to happen with so many insular thinking people in the Bay and so many protective of their “patch” – narrow minded thinking – we have a very small population in HB and really don’t need so many councils and councillors. One council; a representation of councillors equally from throughout the region; pay them a bit more for the extra work that will be required; and a large centralised bureaucracy with the best people for the jobs; and let them get on with regional representation rather than small area representation. It can be done – look at the response to Gabrielle!
Hi Grant,I like your idea , you / we can go the first step in your direction with a submission to HBRC HDC or NCC regarding the Future Development Strategy for Hastings and Napier . A lot of money is already spent for consultants but only for the development of Hastings and Napier. Other communities of Hb are excluded. The draft of the strategy (FDS) for 30 years is published and will be open for submissions in this month. The current draft is mainly a plan to satisfy developers for new subdivisions and of retirement villages with cheap land around the two cities. If it would be a Strategy for the whole region,it could be a win win situation for all. The strategy should also promote more development e.g. for Wairoa and Waipukurau including a regional public bus service , which may be supported within the 30 year .planning time by a regional passenger train service. It is difficult to understand how a REGIONAL council can support the development of only two cities and neglecting the whole region.

Point taken – you have a fuller strategy plan than I have – submit it as you say and I’ll look to putting in an idea or two as well separately. Good luck
When this HB council is achieved, have the HQ central but rotate the Council meetings Napier, CHB, Hasting, Wairoa. Perhaps a HB Council bus/mini vans.
yes amalgamate the two city councils saves money and efficacy
