Napier City Council at work

In case you don’t follow local politics closely, the mayor of Napier hasn’t been getting along well with his councillor colleagues.

In olden times he would have been knifed outside the Senate chamber. But perhaps reflecting on the approaching Ides of March, Mayor Richard McGrath issued this statement, Tuesday 10 March:

Today I met with my fellow councillors and listened to concerns some had about my recent decisions regarding internal processes, communication and the appointment of a Deputy Mayor. We had a collective and constructive discussion, it was positive to come together to talk through a way forward.

I have heard those concerns, including those raised about transparency in the process, and we will now move to a process that allows councillors around the table the opportunity to elect a Deputy Mayor. We will follow the process set out in the Local Government Act, which provides a clear and transparent pathway for councillors to consider and vote on this role.

I want to acknowledge and apologise for any hurt or harm my decisions may have caused Councillor Crown or Deputy Mayor Brownlie.

My priority is ensuring we continue to work together as a council, aligned, respectful, and focused on delivering the best outcomes for Napier. Today’s discussion was a positive step in moving forward together as a team and focusing on the work ahead for our city.

OK, so maybe a re-boot! Shouldn’t take long to see.

  1. probably because he discovered no-one else could stomach his racist narcissistic dumbfuckery. (except Napier voters, who – and i’m being generous here – clearly didn’t know what they were voting for).
