A Cornucopia of Christmas Music

December 3, 2023 @ 4:00 pm 9:30 pm

Hastings Choral Society is delighted to be presenting an inspiring and uplifting celebration of traditional and contemporary Christmas music from around the world in their upcoming ‘Festive Feast’ concert.

Compiled and conducted by musical director Joe Christensen, this concert includes some not so well-known carols such as The Wexford Carol from Ireland, Gesu Bambino from Italy and Christmas Night Cradle Song from Australia as well as some more possibly more well-known carols such as The Shepherd’s Farewell from France, The Linden Tree from Germany and the Czech Zither Carol.  There will also be a number for New Zealand carols that the audience may not have heard before.

This rich collection of carols will provide the audience with the opportunity to experience some Christmas and advent music that is beyond the usual commercial offerings heard at other Christmas events. It will be a true ‘Festive Feast’ of music that will appeal to young and old.

Joining the choir for the concert will be wonderful local soprano soloists Giselle Clements and Kirsty McMinn-Collard and a talented young alto, Renee Thompson, who has just completed her first year of study in music and theatre at Victoria University.

Accompanying the choir will be Anna Hansen on piano and Kathy Fletcher on flute.

Included in this programme of carols the choir will also be presenting Benjamin Britten’s A Ceremony of Carols which is written in Old English and Latin. This work was composed in 1942 when he was returning to England after spending time in North America as a pacifist during WWII.

Edward Benjamin Britten (1913-1976) was a central figure of 20th century British music with a range of works including opera, other vocal music, orchestral and chamber pieces. He was awarded a life peerage in 1976, the first composer to receive this honour.

The ‘Festive Feast’concert will be at 4.00pm Sunday 3 December at Village Baptist Church, Te Aute Road, Havelock North. Sales of tickets for $30.00 adults and $5.00 children are available at the door. Cash sales only.
