A Small Hall Session with Jan Preston
February 24 @ 6:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Jan Preston has forged a remarkable career as an entertainer, from being a founding member of NZ’s radical experimental theatre troupe, Red Mole, in the 70’s to now being considered Australasia’s leading proponent of a whole genre of music. Along the way she has won 5 National Music Awards, had Number One hits in the 80’s with her band Coup d’Etat (Doctor I Like Your Medicine) written scores for Film and Televison, and had her original composition selected as the theme music for BBC London’s Evening Show. Her one-woman show, 60 Years in Pianoland, has played to sold out audiences throughout Australia and new Zealand. It’s an impressive CV!
She’s returning to Napier for a school reunion – class of 1962-63 at Napier Intermediate, and has generously agreed to do three Small Hall Sessions with us.
Jan’s musical ability is extraordinary. She began playing as a child in Greymouth, she studied here in Napier under Mona Walls and Winifred McCarthy and she completed a five year degree at Auckland University in Classical piano.
But it’s Jan’s personality, combined with those skills that have allowed such an amazing career. With a true West Coaster’s candid, open personality, a quick wit and a love of a good time, she is widely known for entrancing audiences.
Expect a show that allows you to get to know the many aspects of a remarkable artist. We are so very lucky to have her coming to play.
In the video below, from the wonderful Marty Duda’s 13th Floor website, Jan plays an original compostion with her husband Mike Pullman (an Old Boy of William Colenso College!). Mike will be accompanying her in her Hawke’s Bay shows.
