Taikura Fête

November 20, 2022 @ 10:00 am 3:00 pm

Old-school fun, traditional handicrafts, and home-made food from around the world will be on offer in the heart of Hastings in the run-up to the festive season.

The annual Taikura Steiner School Christmas fete is on Sunday 20 November at the school grounds on Nelson St, Hastings from 10am to 3pm.

Suzan Bart is one of the people responsible for pulling the event together every year. Preparations begin in August and parents from across the school get involved, taking on every role from burger flipper to fairy queen to clean-up crew.

“It’s a big day for our community. It’s our chance to showcase to the wider community what our school is about, our special character,” says Suzan who began at the school as a student in 1983 and whose children were students there.

“It’s a great day with entertainment, lots of places to sit and relax, plenty of action for all ages,” explains Suzan. “It’s good old-fashioned, wholesome fun.”

The fete makes full use of the park-like school grounds. “It’s a sanctuary in the middle of the City and this our chance to share it with our neighbours and our community,” explains Suzan.

In some form, over its nearly 75 years, Taikura has always had an ‘Advent fair’ in the run up to Christmas. Up until ten years ago it was a humble affair but now the annual fixture boasts a ‘bazaar’ of over 30 craft stalls, 12 food stalls from pakoras to organic burgers to waffles, and 30 children’s activity stalls. These include puppet shows, candle boats, art spin, face painting, the infamous Shocker machine, archery, fencing, fairy house, potion house, clay play and the ever-popular, old-school push go-carts.
