The NZ Mountain Film Festival: National Tour – Hawkes Bay

July 28, 2023 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Slide, glide, or hike to the MTG Century Theatre in Napier for an inspiring night out on Friday 28th July 2023 to watch an outstanding collection of unique adventure and award-winning films in the 2023 New Zealand Mountain Film Festival’s ‘National Tour’.

The content, the magnitude of the exploits, along with the cinematography makes for an impressive programme that will truly inspire Taupō’s adventure orientated community.

“This programme with six mesmerizing films has something for everybody, whatever your adventure is”, said local Organiser Brett Cotter.

The Grand Prize winning film, New Way Up follows Fabi Buhl and Will Sim, both experienced alpinists, on their epic journey as they attempt to set a new direction in climbing. High in the Himalayans rest the Karakoram mountains which are renowned for their huge scale and jaw-dropping beauty. Nestled within them is Gulmit Tower, a technical granite pinnacle that has never been summited.

Previous teams have often failed attempts to summit this harsh landscape because the highly glaciated terrain makes the approach by foot long and treacherous. However, mountaineers Buhl and Sim have a new idea – planning to harness the power of the sky and use paragliders to fly over the glaciated terrain, reaching the base of the climb in hours, not days.

Also in the line-up, is the inspiring film Momentum that documents the journey of Australian climber Angie Scarth-Johnson, who by the age of 18, had climbed three 9a grades in Europe. This achievement kicked off a year of impressive sends, notably Victimas Perez 9a (35) and Pornographie 9a (35). The momentum gained in such a short time has everyone asking – what will Angie do next?

Flow State won the Best Cinematography award on its documentary traversing the high line of extreme sport as two friends challenge each other, and themselves, to overcome past trauma and become better men, 1000m above ground.

Winner of the Hiddleston/MacQueen Award for Best NZ-Made Film is Changabang: Return to the Shining Mountain. In 1976 British alpinists made the first ascent of the West Wall of Changabang, a mountain in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand, India. For the next four decades the route gained legendary status as climbers from around the world came and tried, unsuccessfully, to repeat this iconic climb. In 2022, three members of the New Zealand Alpine Team tried their luck on this infamous climb.

“Our local audience savour this annual adventure film fest; what could be better than sitting alongside fellow outdoor enthusiasts letting your imagination go wild and planning your next adventure?” said Brett.

The NZ Mountain Film Festival ‘National Tour’ will be shown at the MTG Century Theatre in Napier on Friday 28th July, 7pm. Tickets are $22.50 for Adults, $17.50 for Under 17 year olds, and $13.50 for Under 12 years olds; available on-line at www.trybooking.co.nz and from the MTG Century Theatre, and on the night at the Theatre.
