Waipureku Waitangi Commemoration

February 6 @ 7:30 am 4:00 pm

7:45 am – 8:15 am Meet at Ātea a Rangi, Waitangi Park, Awatoto to start the Hikoi (Walk of Unity). 

This will include karakia, korero by Piripi Smith (Ātea-a-Rangi Trust). Also attending will be Iwi Kaumatua, descendants of the signatories of Te Tiriti and members of the public. 

8:15 am – 8:45 am Hikoi along the banks of Te Awa o Mokotuararo to 

Farndon Park (riverside). 

Everyone is welcome to join the hikoi from the Ātea a Rangi; however, if you 

are unable to walk the distance please join the hikoi at Clive Bridge, where walkers will pause at the memorial plaque of the chiefs who signed the Te Tiriti close by – Te Hapuku, Hoani Waikato and Harawira Mahikai Te Tātere. 

8:45 am – 9:30 am Haka Pōwhiri 

Farndon Park (Riverside), with Manawhenua – Ngāti Hori ki Kohupātiki, 

Ngāti Hawea ki Matahiwi, Te Aute Kāreti and Hukarere Māori Girls College. 

9:30 am – 9:45 am Mayors of Hastings District, Napier City and Chair of the Hawkes Bay Regional Council will talk about what they have been doing to honour Te Tiriti. 

9:45 – 10 am Keynote Speaker 

Heather Te Au – Skipworth QSM 

Te Tiriti in Action – now and in the future. 

Please stay and join us for Hākari. 

During this time everyone will be invited to sign the Te Tiriti o te Rangimarie (Peace Treaty) located on the stage. 

10:30 am Morning Session ends 

1:00 pm Pat Parsons – The History of Waipureku and the signing of Te Tiriti in Te Matau a Maui/Hawkes Bay. 

1:30 pm onwards 

1) Korero on speakers’ personal perspectives / experiences on honouring 

Te Tiriti 

How they see it put into action in their lives. Personal perspectives. 

(5-10 minutes each) 

Speakers: Neill Gordon, Natalie Cornelius, Kimberley Moody, Ria Roberts, Rizwaana Latiff, Maxine Boag – facilitator 

2) The State of the Nation: Moving Forward as Te Tiriti Partners 

Panel discussion on what is the state of the nation in terms of honouring Te Tiriti: positives and negatives in terms of what we’re doing (and not doing) to honour Te Tiriti. 

Panel: Hira Huata, Putaanga Waitoa, Marilyn Scott, Denis O’Reilly, Robyn Piggot, Erena Tomoana, Nick Ratcliffe. 

3) Mahi korero – Where to from here? Action Plan 

How can we move forward in honouring Te Tiriti as Tangata Tiriti in partnership 

with Tangata Whenua – as individuals, as collectives, as a region, as a nation?
