Waipureku Waitangi Commemoration
February 6, 2023 @ 8:00 am – 5:00 pm
The Waipureku Waitangi Trust invites you to the commemoration of the signing of Te Tiriti o Waitangi by three Ngāti Kahungunu chiefs at Waipureku (Clive) in 1840.
Waipureku, meaning ’the meeting of waters’, was a lagoon that joined the Ngaruroro-Mokotuararo-ki-Rangatira and Tukituki rivers.
The commemoration begins at 7.45am at Ātea a rangi (Waitangi Regional Park, Awatoto) with karakia to start the Hikoi (walk of unity) along the Ngaruroro riverbank to Farndon Park and welcomed with a Haka Pōwhiri at 8.30am by local Manawhenua.
Following the pōwhiri, local politicians will have a public address, a Keynote speaker, and talks by regional historian Pat Parson and others.
Following morning tea there will be a keynote address, a panel discussion and a Te Tiriti o Waitangi workshop.
