Tōmoana Showgrounds grandstand unsafe

The Tōmoana Showgrounds grandstand will be demolished for safety reasons, beginning next April.

This means the structure will be standing, but unused, for next year’s Horse of the Year, to be held March 5-10.

Land Rover Horse of the Year event manager Sophie Blake said that while they were naturally disappointed that the grandstand seating could not be used, they understood the decision made by Council.

“We believe that change brings opportunities, and we will make the most of this situation by finding alternatives that provide the same unique experience and atmosphere that our event is known for.”

Demolition of the grandstand was signalled during public consultation earlier this year around the purchase of the showgrounds by the Hastings District Council. Subsequent investigations have found the roof and seating areas unsound, with demolition the most prudent course of action.

HDC’s strategy and recovery committee chair Wendy Schollum said, “No decisions have been made as yet about what might replace the building – options for the future will be discussed with the park’s stakeholders.”
