STINGS DOES DECO

Hastings is getting into the deco swing this year. Art Deco events that were previously held at the Hastings City Mall have been moved to the Albert Square. From 10am to 8pm there’s a day full of fun on offer.

It’s the Art Deco weekend jam-packed into one day, on Thursday February 18.

Dust of the cloche, beads, feathers, waist coats and boaters and strut your stuff for the ‘Fashion Flaunt’ that starts at 5.30pm … you might win a prize from a local business. There is also a very special showcase happening with Toi Deco Māori traditional garments as part of the electrifying Hakui Hakoro Fashion Parade.

If you’re still needing some vintage pieces or Art Deco clothes, there will be a market where you can shop.

Heaps of music from Lindisfarne Colleges’ Jazz Band, Deco Bay Brass and the Twin City Stompers might encourage you to get up and do a bit of a swing, and if you don’t feel like joining the dancing you can watch the dance displays provided by Born to Move Dancers.

You won’t be going hungry either, as local food trucks will be on site.

But, wait there’s more … the Hastings Vintage Car Show & Shine will display over 20 of the best vintage cars in the region on Heretaunga St East. And if you prefer planes, an impressive flyover in Hastings will occur at 7pm with the New Zealand Warbirds – the first time on display in Hastings.

Then there’s trains.

Napier folks can travel in style to the Hastings art deco experience. Catch a ride with the vintage railcar shuttle, departing from Napier Train station to Hastings Railway station. You’ll have an hour to explore the Hastings offering before heading back to Napier.
