It’s great to see the Hastings District Council supporting the quaint custom of real readers borrowing real books from real libraries.

[You would expect BayBuzz to have a soft spot in its heart for print, after all!]

To make the process of keeping track of its roughly 220,000 items (OK, that includes some nouveau DVDs and CDs as well) easier for both borrowers and library staff, each item is now ‘tagged’ using Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.

Books will be able to be self-checked via multi-language machines and staff can efficiently keep track of the inventory.

Hey, if it’s good enough for dogs and cats!

To complete the installations (hardware and cabling), each of the HDC libraries will be closed for one whole day on a rolling basis, starting 24 May. A small inconvenience for useful modernisation.
