Kahungunu turns soil in Ōtāne for 20 new homes

Ngāti Kahungunu Iwi Incorporated is building 20 beautiful homes in Ōtāne, Central Hawke’s Bay, as part of the Whai Kainga Whai Oranga housing initiative to provide much needed warm, healthy, affordable rental homes for iwi whānau.

Development work on the 3-4 bedroom homes will begin this November.

“This  is not social housing and we want people to use this as a footstep up the ladder to have an affordable rental home, a beautiful affordable rental home, and then progress up to home ownership at some stage whether it’s with us or some others, we’ll leave that up to them,” said NKII’s housing manager Steve Gordon.

Where should Hastings grow?

Hastings residents are invited to have their say on housing, amenity open spaces, three waters infrastructure, and transport as part of the new Local Area Plan (LAP) programme.

Aligned with the draft Future Development Strategy and the Hastings Medium Density Housing Strategy, LAPsguide sustainable growth within the city.

The LAP programme provides direction for where residential intensification can best be accommodated, followed by the preparation of neighbourhood-scale plans for specific areas.

With Hastings’ population projected to grow from 91,900 in 2023 to as many as 121,800 by 2053, strategic planning is essential to balance housing needs, infrastructure improvements, and the protection of fertile soils.

“The Local Area Plans give everyone the opportunity to have their say on how we can create vibrant, sustainable neighbourhoods for generations to come,” said mayor Sandra Hazlehurst.

The first plans will focus on areas around Cornwall Park and the central city, HB Hospital and Kaweka private hospital, and Heretaunga Street West. LAPs for other areas will follow.

The consultation is open now and runs until December 20. Visit https://lap.myvoicemychoice.co.nz/ to explore the plans and provide feedback.
