The seasonal ban on outdoor burning for properties in the Hastings and Napier airsheds commences May 1 and lasts until 31 August.

If you’re thinking of burning, first check here to see if you are in the restricted areas.

Outside those areas, different rules apply.

Find all the relevant info here.

Why do these rules exist?

Because the fine particulates in smoke represent a serious health hazard for everyone, but especially those with existing respiratory (e.g., asthma) and cardiovascular issues … and those of us simply wishing to avoid lung cancer!

Other than that, not a problem!

Anyone wanting to report nuisance or illegal burning can contact the council’s 24/7 Pollution Hotline on 0800 108 838. The Hotline logs an average of 200 burning and smoke nuisance complaints each year.

  1. Fresh air to breathe should not be a privilege but a right. My life depends upon it and so do many others.
