Hastings’ deputy mayor will not be seeking re-election in October and plans to spend evenings talking to her husband rather than reading council papers.
Tania Kerr has served as deputy mayor of Hastings District Council for the past eight years, a councillor for 17 years, and a member of the Hastings District Rural Community Board since 2001.
“When I was elected 24 years ago I was hapu. It’s time now to step away and take a breather,” Kerr said. “I’ll be able to spend my evenings talking to my husband instead of reading council papers.”
She said she was leaving a great council with a fantastic team. “We can argue the point one minute and have a cup of tea the next. Our focus is always on the best solutions for the community. “It’s sad, because I will miss it, but it’s also scary and exciting because I don’t know what the future holds.”
Kerr said their farm was badly damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle, “so I have plenty to do”. The aftermath of Cyclone Gabrielle has significantly shaped her responsibilities over the past two years. “Supporting our close-knit rural communities, keeping them informed, involving them in discussions about access and lifelines, and meeting families who have suffered the loss of loved ones, as well as those who have lost all their possessions, has been profoundly rewarding.”
Kerr said she had relished the challenge and reward of serving not only the rural community but also the broader Hastings District ratepayers. “It has been an honour working as Mayor Hazlehurst’s deputy.” The council’s decision to approve a Māori ward stands out as the most significant accomplishment. She said over the years she had built a robust and trusted partnership with local mana whenua. “Our aspirations for our people are aligned, as we strive to ensure decisions are made with the welfare of our people, and with our grandchildren’s grandchildren in mind, leaving our community and environment in a better state than we started.”
She will remain as Deputy Mayor and Councillor of the Mohaka Ward until the local body elections in October. She encourages anyone considering standing in her ward to do so, as it is a most rewarding role.

Graeme, “show appreciation” … you gotta be kidding! Anyone who reads BayBuzz with any regularity and thinks BayBuzz lets any of our councils off the hook has serious reading comprehension deficiencies. As for Tania Kerr, voters in her ward have had MANY opportunities to throw her under the bus at election time, but it never happened. So, either they’re total fools or they know her better than you do. Try standing for office Graeme. Tom
Tom, are you OK? Your comments are particularly nasty today, did someone strike a nerve when saying you are a sponsored Council rag? You don’t ever call the Council’s out, you skirt about but are happy to name and shame Trump. It’s easy to do when it’s not in your own back yard isn’t it. Now you know how the ratepayers of Hawke’s Bay feel. People don’t stand for office because of the inbedded corruption. You know that too, because you occasionally report on it but don’t dig deeper. I imagine you won’t post this comment but perhaps you should think seriously about your journalistic integrity before calling out people who speak the truth willingly rather than bowing to the powers that be.
