The visible impact of Cyclone Gabrielle’s devastating silt has been on the land. But the silt has also been deadly to our river and stream ecosystems.

Silt damages freshwater habitat

Destroying the habitat of the ‘bugs’ (macroinvertebrates) who provide the beginning of our freshwater food chain. BayBuzz videographer Patrick O’Sullivan reports.

  1. After the Cyclone struck us here in HB we noticed the food shortage for Nectar feeding birds, there was not a flower to be seen anywhere, we decided to build a sugar feeding station on our back lawn, within days we had literally 100’s of Wax Eyes visiting, and in the following days we had 8 Tui take up residence a year later and it’s still the same, except the Tui population has expanded, pre the Cyclone we had never ever had Tui in our area, with that experience one can well understand the Coastal problems especially when you see aerial shots of the dirty water clouding the foreshore, it must suffocate any and all sea life, thankyou for sharing this report.
